About the qualifying process

The part one test is the theory test. The test is in 2 parts, the multiple choice theory test and the hazard perception test.

The entire theory test is computer based. The multiple choice theory test consists of 100 multiple choice questions in 4 sections. You need to score an overall mark of 85% to pass and score at least 80% in each section to pass.

On the hazard perception test, you are shown 14 video clips on the screen. These clips require you to spot 'developing hazards' and click the computer mouse when you spot the hazard. You will need to score at least 57 out of 75 to pass this part.

You can take as many attempts at the ADI part one as you need.

ADI Part 2

The ADI Part 2 is a test of your own driving ability, the test is at an advanced standard and lasts for about one hour. You need to carry out all the manoeuvres in the DSA syllabus and drive to a very high standard. You are allowed a maximum of 6 driving faults but no serious faults or dangerous faults.

You will also be required to carry out a period of Independent Driving.

You are limited to 3 attempts at the Part 2 test.

ADI Part 3

The ADI Part 3 is a test of your instructional ability. The test lasts for about one hour and is the final part of the qualifying process. The test uses role play and requires you to instruct the DSA Examiner, with the Examiner acting as the pupil. The Part 3 is split into two phases each lasting about 25 minutes, phase one involves teaching a 'pupil' with very little experience, phase two involves teaching a more experienced driver.

You are limited to 3 attempts at the Part 3 test. The national average pass rate for the part 3 test is slightly over 20%, at Inverness ADI Training our current part 3 pass rate is 75%.
